The Torin Big Red stands are supposed to be good too, but similarly, there are reviews of bad welds on them. I've seen good reviews of ESCO stands, but then looking through the Amazon reviews, there are quite a few 1-star reviews for different reasons. The real big question for me is - what is better? My Craftsmans are utter garbage. My HF stands have been great but I'm second guessing them now. I only use them to hold strings when setting toe. I have a set of Craftsman stands I wouldn't trust for a second. Should I do it for piece of mind? If so, that would suggest that I've lost faith in them just because other HF 3T stands failed and that's irrational. ![]() They work and there's no reason to expect them to fail any more than I should expect another brand's 3T stands to fail. It's not like they're just collecting dust. But, I use them and have for nearly a decade. I have the 3T stands that were not recalled, were not found to have weak welds, and now have the opportunity to return them for refund/credit. Obviously nothing happened, but wow how scary to think about. I feel like I really dodged a bullet last year doing my clutch replacement with the defective HF stands. Nevertheless I purchased another set of ProLift in 3 ton size also. ![]() I also had some much older HF 3 ton stands, similar in design to the recalled 6 ton models, but not included in the recall. This is in addition to the pawl on the lever that engages the teeth, but is prone to slip out of the too shallow teeth on the HF. The biggest difference in the two models, however, is the ProLift adds a triangular shaped locking pin, that threads through the jack stands and engages the teeth. Photos attached clearly show this, with the HF part being black and the ProLift being red. First the HF lifting post teeth were significantly shallower than the ones on the ProLift. The two products share many similarities. When I got the ProLift stands I compared them to the HF recalled stands. Before returning them I purchased some ProLift stands on Amazon. I took my HF 6 ton stands back for a refund yesterday. Harbor Freight has discontinued the sale of affected stand models, and the company says it “will provide a gift card equal to the shelf price of these jack stands to all customers who have purchased them.” Get more information here." Instead, the retailer says that “aging of the tooling and inconsistent location indexing of the pawl armature hole” has led to a condition whereby “the ratchet teeth on the jack stand lifting extension inconsistently engage the pawl to sufficient depth.” This potential lack of positive engagement means that the stand could fail suddenly and without warning a small shift in the load on the stand could be enough to trigger the the failure. "In the case of the recalled Harbor Freight stands, the problem is not inherent to the design of the stands themselves. "Taking all models and part numbers together, roughly 1.7 million stands are covered by this recall."
